"Miranda!"
James rushed in her direction, praying to any and every god that she was still alive. Falling onto his knees beside her, he gathered her fragile, bloody form into his arms and pressed her against his chest. His heart was galloping loudly within his ribcage, sounding the alarm against his eardrums as he forced himself to retain some semblance of calm.
Brushing back Miranda's dark hair, he bit back a string of curses at the sight of her bruised face. What had happened to her? He swallowed hard as he pressed his fingers against her neck, searching desperately for a pulse. There was a faint thump-thump, thump-thump, and James let out a breath of relief. Thank God.
"Miranda," he gently said her name before pressing his lips to her brow. "Open your eyes, mi corazon." He waited a second, and when there was still no response he kissed her forehead again and whispered, "Please, mi tesoro, mi amor, te necesito. Por favor, open your eyes."
